Penrith's Dayton Tavares is set to light up the stage as Billy Elliot.
DAYTON Tavares' twinkle toes have put his name up in lights.
Dayton, 12, from Penrith, has won a starring role in Billy Elliot the Musical.
He started rehearsals last Monday and will make his debut at the Capitol Theatre in eight to 14 weeks.
"It's been really good," Dayton said.
"We do some tap, maybe some ballet and maybe some singing."
Billy Elliot the Musical follows the journey of a young boy raised in a small British mining town who after stumbling across a ballet class while on his way to a boxing lesson realises his future is on the stage as a dancer.
Dayton had a similar experience, inspired to try dancing by his sisters after watching them in eisteddfods.
He now studies jazz, tap, ballet, modern, contemporary, hip-hop and singing at Studio 11 in Penrith.
"I started dance in 2005 and singing in 2007," Dayton said. "I just thought it (Billy Elliot) was a good opportunity to get on stage and do what I love."
"I don't really get many feelings (on stage); you just get a lot of adrenaline, and you don't really feel much, but it's fun," Dayton said.
"I'm probably going to be nervous, but excited at the same time."
The award-winning creative team that made the film Billy Elliot is also behind the musical, which opened in Sydney in December.
The music was written by Elton John, with lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and Stephen Daldry as director.
Dayton has a favourite scene from the film he's keen to recreate.
"I like the part where he's tapping down the street and he can't stop," he said.
For the musical, Dayton's set his sights a little higher.
"I liked the flying," he said.
